About
It started as one website
for one tattoo shop.
Stencil began as a single hand-built website for a tattoo studio — the shop where the founder gets tattooed. Building it surfaced a pattern that never went away: tattoo artists are some of the best visual people alive, stuck with the worst software options. Generic website builders that don't understand a portfolio. Salon apps that think a sleeve is an appointment. Client history scattered across saved DMs, camera rolls, and memory.
So the one website became a platform. First the sites: templates and themes where every design decision is already made, because artists shouldn't have to moonlight as web designers to look as good online as their work does on skin. Then booking, because "DM me" is not a booking system. Then the CRM — the request inbox, the waitlist, clients, multi-session projects with healed photos and deposits, guest artist calendars, commission splits — because the business side of tattooing deserved tools shaped like tattooing, not hand-me-downs from hair salons.
What we believe
Design decisions are our job, not yours. You pick a template and a theme; both are already good. Switch anytime, lose nothing.
Your data is yours. Import your client list from wherever you're escaping; export it whenever you want. Software that holds your clients hostage doesn't deserve them.
Estimates are estimates. Session counts on a sleeve are approximate and our product says so out loud. Software that pretends false precision teaches people to distrust it.
A tattoo CRM is not a medical record. We give you a notes field and advise you to keep sensitive details minimal. We'd rather lose a feature comparison than mislead you about what this system should hold.
Where it is today
Stencil is in open beta: free, one site per account, built and run by a very small team in Utah with artists giving feedback from the chair. Paid plans will come — additional sites, custom domains — and the promise is that they'll price like a tool, not a tax.
